Column radiators have long been seen as a timeless classic, with a style that suits all kinds of homes. They are usually thought of as a traditional design, built from rows of vertical tubes, and they are often described as having a "cast iron" look. The gaps between the columns let air flow around each one, which is part of how they give out their heat.
That old-fashioned style, familiar from old schools and hospitals, has become a popular choice again. Today's column radiators can blend quietly into a room or be the feature everyone notices.
Choosing a column radiator
Column radiators come in steel and cast iron, in 2, 3, 4 and 6 column builds, and in horizontal and vertical styles to suit period and modern rooms alike. The number of columns sets the depth of the radiator, so measure the space you have before you choose.
Our column radiator collection includes ranges from brands such as Reina, Zehnder, Myson, Centerrad and Wallace and Squires. Heat output varies with height, length and the number of columns, so check the output on each product page against the figure your room needs. Our Help Choosing a Radiator guide explains how to work that out.
Central heating or electric?
Most column radiators connect to your home's central heating, which is the most common way to run a radiator. Some ranges are also made as electric models, so you can choose how you heat each room.
An electric radiator is not connected to your central heating. You can switch it on and off on its own and set how long and how warm it runs, so you only heat the rooms you are using. The Zehnder Charleston range, for example, includes electric column radiators. Running costs depend on your electricity tariff, so compare them with your central heating before you decide. Electric models need a suitable electrical supply; follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Simple, bespoke or traditional
If you want something simple, a standard white column radiator suits almost any room. If you want a particular colour or finish, take a look at our bespoke radiators, where you can choose from the colours and finishes each manufacturer offers.
For a choice of horizontal and vertical column radiators, the Centerrad range is worth a look. And if you are after a more traditional piece, the Wallace and Squires Hampstead range offers cast iron column radiators with a classic design. Cast iron radiators are heavy. Check the fixing method in the manufacturer's instructions, and ask your installer to check the wall or floor.
