A Home for Every Radiator: Choosing Room by Room

A radiator can be a vital part of the home, especially when winter is on its way. With so many styles, sizes and colours to choose from, it helps to start with the room. This guide looks at what tends to work in each part of the house, and how to compare radiators before you buy.

Living rooms

The living room is often where people choose a radiator for its looks as well as its heat. Designer radiators come with flat panels, tubes and unusual shapes in a range of finishes, while column radiators give a traditional look that suits period and modern rooms alike. In a larger room you may need more than one radiator to reach the heat output the room needs, for example one under each window.

Bathrooms and en suites

Towel radiators warm and dry towels as well as heating the room. If a towel radiator is the only heat source in a bathroom, ask your heating engineer to confirm that its output meets the room's needs. Electric and dual fuel towel radiators are also available if you want to use the towel rail when the central heating is off. Electric models need a suitable electrical supply; follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Bedrooms, hallways and kitchens

In these rooms, space is often the deciding factor. A panel radiator is the everyday choice for most homes. Where wall space is narrow, a vertical radiator can fit beside a door or in an alcove. Our electric radiators can suit rooms you heat at different times from the rest of the house.

Rooms for children or older people

If you are heating a room for someone who may be at risk from a hot surface, take a look at LST (low surface temperature) radiators. Their casing keeps the surface you can touch cooler than an exposed radiator. Where the manufacturer states a maximum surface temperature, check the conditions it applies to on the product page.
